Reading Resources: Guided Reading Bringing a variety
of literature into the classroom is a big job for the guided reading teacher.
Bibliographies of quality books, complete with summaries and suggested
comprehension activities, are a click away. Graphic organizers are great
for supporting reading, and programs like Inspiration
and Kidspiration are engaging tools
for comprehension activities. Many resources on the web also help teachers
(re)discover strategies to bring into a guided reading group. Graphic Organizers for Reading Comprehension Fill out simple forms to generate graphic organizers such as concept maps and SQ3R charts to help kids as they read. Tools for Reading, Writing, and Thinking Numerous examples of graphic organizers for students to use to generate meaning from text. Use Excel to help students understand the plot of a story. Carol Hurst's Children's Literature In the Children's Books section, read book summaries, get ideas for discussion topics and activities, and follow related web sites. Nancy
Keane's Booktalks Excellent resources for Hispanic parents working with their children on reading skills. In the "Books, stories and more" link, search for books that you can use with Spanish-speaking students in the classroom. Even without a subscription, you can print out leveled books as supplemental readers in the classroom or for home. Favorite stories are read by members of the Screen Actors Guild. Kids or adults can easily navigate to background information on the story, a biography of the author, or even a biography of the famous reader. Wonderful extension activites also make it a superb site for the busy teacher. Try making it a literacy center in your classroom.
